Grinding Wheels
Grinding Wheels
There are five main types of grinding wheels:
- Straight Wheels: Straight wheels are by far the most common style of wheel. They are used on the periphery only and therefore produce a slightly concave surface (hollow ground) on the part. This can be used to advantage on many tools such as chisels and for cylindrical, centreless, and surface grinding operations.
- Bench/Pedestal Wheels: Bench and pedestal wheels are commonly used in tool rooms for all metal removal, deburring, shaping and sharpening applications in the maintenance and repair industry.
- Cup Wheels: The face of a cup wheel provides an additional radial grinding surface, which can be beneficial in some applications. The two sides of a straight cup wheel are at a right angle to the base. With tapered cup wheels the sides taper outwards, providing extra strength and therefore accepting higher lateral loads. Both types are primarily used in tool & cutter grinding.
- Dish Wheels: Dish grinding wheels look like cup wheels but are shallow and have a thinner surface edge. Their narrow shape allows them to fit into tight crevices a cup wheel would never be able to reach. They are otherwise used for the same applications as a cup wheel.
- Segmented Wheels: Grinding wheel segments are generally used to grind flat stock or flat surfaces within a workpiece for anything from heavy stock removal to precision grinding.
