Description

Product Description of the Mirka Sica Open / Sica Fine Antistatic Paper Wide Belts

Sica Open - Grits 80-180
Sica Open is the recommended solution for sanding soft, resin-rich wood types. The open coating and completely anti-static backing material and layers limit dust loading and prevent clogging which improves product lifespan. In addition, silicon carbide grains produce a smoother scratch pattern and a higher surface gloss level than aluminium-oxide based sanding materials.

The silicon carbide abrasive also requires less pressure to be applied as it is very sharp and so will do most of the work rather for the operator, which prevents gouging of the workpiece and makes Sica Open ideal for sanding plastics & composites.

Technical Specifications
• Grain: Silicon carbide
• Color: Black
• Backing: Antistatic F-paper
• Bonding: Resin over resin/Antistatic
• Grit range: P80-P180
• Coating: Open

Sica Fine - Grits 240-800
Sica Fine is a fully antistatic product which minimises dust load and helps produce a high-quality surface finish. For example, it results in a perfect finish after surface treatment with a top lacquer – it even minimises lacquer usage.

The silicon carbide abrasive also requires less pressure to be applied as it is very sharp and so will do most of the work rather for the operator, which prevents gouging of the workpiece and makes Sica Fine ideal for sanding plastics & composites.

Technical Specifications
• Grain: Silicon carbide
• Color: Black
• Backing: Antistatic E-paper
• Bonding: Resin over resin/Antistatic
• Grit range: P240-P800
• Coating: Semi-open

Recommended for plastics & composites due to the silicon carbide grains requiring less pressure and providing a finer scratch pattern without gouging the workpiece.

Why Use Silicon Carbide?

Silicon carbide is the hardest common abrasive grain with exception of diamond. Because it is tougher and sharper than aluminium oxide, even though it tends to wear down more quickly, it is still a long-lasting product that works well for polishing, harder materials, and uneven surfaces. It is the only grain that works well on glass, stone, and marble and is especially useful for metals, especially the tougher kinds, while also suitable for cork and MDF as well.

Silicon carbide is widely used in wet sanding applications, including automotive polishing and the polishing of stone and marble. This works well in coarser grits for deburring metal and glass, rust removal, and refinishing wood floors (cutting through/removing earlier finishes). It is standard practice to use aluminium oxide for rough sanding raw wood and move to silicon carbide for finishing phases of the same job since it may also be used to sand in between finishing coatings in woodworking projects.

As an abrasive it is a somewhat adaptable and forgiving material that may be used in power and manual sanding applications, in the form of, among others, belts, discs, sheets, and sponges.
