PPE for Sanding Wood & Metal: What Inspectors Look For in 2025

PPE for sanding wood and metal is a frequent inspection topic in 2025. Inspectors want to see the right respiratory, eye, hearing, hand and body protection in place — but also proof it has been assessed, provided, maintained and trained on. This guide shows exactly what “good” looks like on the shop floor.
At-a-Glance: PPE by Task
| Task | Respiratory (RPE) | Eye / Face | Hearing | Hands / Body / Feet |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wood sanding | FFP3 disposable or P3 half mask; fit-tested; APF≈20 | Safety specs (EN166 F) or sealed goggles (EN166 B) | Ear plugs/muffs (EN352) with correct SNR | Gloves (EN388), close-fit clothing, safety footwear |
| Metal sanding & grinding | P3 particulate; consider powered RPE (TH2/TH3) | Impact goggles or face shield (EN166 B/A) | Ear protection (EN352), matched to noise level | Cut-resistant gloves, FR clothing, S3 safety boots |
RPE: What “Good” Looks Like
- Use FFP3 or P3 for both wood dust (including hardwood) and metal dust.
- Face-fit testing must be done for each wearer and model; keep records.
- Carry out daily seal checks and follow filter change schedules.
- Ensure RPE works with goggles/earmuffs without breaking the seal.
Eye, Face & Hearing Protection
- EN166 F glasses are minimum; B-rated goggles or A-rated face shields for metal grinding.
- Hearing protection to EN352, matched to measured noise (aim for 70–80 dB(A) at the ear).
Hands, Clothing & Footwear
- Cut/abrasion resistant gloves to EN388 (avoid entanglement risks).
- Close-fitting, non-snagging clothing; FR aprons/sleeves for sparks.
- EN ISO 20345 safety boots, ideally S3 in fabrication shops.
What Inspectors Look For
- Written PPE assessment linked to COSHH and PPE regs.
- RPE selection and face-fit test records per wearer.
- Filter change and maintenance logs.
- Compatibility checks between RPE, eyewear and hearing protection.
- Evidence of training and supervision.
