Solid surface materials have become a staple in interior and architectural design, used extensively in homes, public spaces, and commercial environments. They are ideal for applications like kitchen countertops, reception desks, washbasins, and shower walls, offering both versatility and durability.

Brands like Corian® by DuPont and others typically produce solid surfaces by combining a resin base with fillers and pigments. This composition simplifies the sanding process, making it easy to prepare these materials for finishing.

With Mirka’s innovative solutions for solid surfaces, you can effortlessly achieve your desired finish, whether it’s a sleek matte look or a brilliant high-gloss shine. By pairing Mirka’s award-winning tools with advanced dust extractors and abrasives, you benefit from a dust-free process, saving time on cleanup and enhancing efficiency. Plus, depending on the application, a variety of stunning finishes can be achieved to match any design aesthetic.

Three Step Process To Achieving A Perfect Solid Surface Finish

Step 1 – Sanding

Begin sanding the surface using a Mirka® DEROS II Sander. For larger surfaces, a Mirka® LEROS-S Sander is recommended for optimal efficiency. Start with Abranet® or Abranet® ACE abrasives, beginning with 120 grit to level out the surface and remove imperfections. Gradually work your way up to 320 grit for a smoother finish.

Ensure the entire surface is evenly sanded, and wipe it clean between grit changes to remove any sanding residue and maintain consistent results.

Step 2 – Damp Sanding

To achieve the desired finish, switch to damp sanding using Abralon®. Ensure both the abrasive and the surface are wet throughout the process. For large surfaces, pair the Mirka® LEROS-S orbital electric sander with Abralon® J3 for optimal performance.

  • For a matte finish, sand once with 360 grit.
  • For a satin finish, sand with 500 grit.
  • For a glossy finish, continue damp sanding with Abralon® up to 4000 grit to achieve a brilliant shine.

Step 3 – Polishing

Polish the surface using Polarshine® 10 and a lambswool pad to achieve a smooth, high-quality finish.

For an enhanced, deeper gloss, perform an optional second round of polishing with Polarshine® 10, this time using a yellow waffle polishing pad for a mirror-like shine.
